Clinical Services Male Continence Rehabilitation What is incontinence? Incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine or stool (leaking). This may occur due to an increase in abdominal pressure upon the bladder and/or rectum with coughing, sneezing, changing positions, walking, and lifting objects to name a few. It may also occur due to a strong uncontrollable urge to urinate or defecate. Incontinence is mostly associated in males after surgical procedures affecting the prostate gland, bladder or rectum, but it may also occur gradually over time after the fifth decade of life. Can physical therapy help me if I suffer from male incontinence? This problem is managed by an experienced physical therapist using a progressive and functional exercise program to help strengthen the pelvic floor muscle. This muscle functions to maintain good closure of the sphincters to help restore control of the bladder and rectum. Other interventions include patient education for fluid and fiber intake, behavioral modification and possible sEMG biofeedback for pelvic floor muscle awareness training. |
